Kung Fu Heron
You never know what you are going to come across at Boundary Bay. Here a great blue heron warms up in the winter sun. Wonder what style of Kung Fu he knows? Taken January 5, 2014.

Old Man Of The Marsh
Lots of blue herons at Buttertubs lately.

Moby Harry (Great Blue Heron)
Here is something you don't see every day at Buttertubs Marsh. This is a leucistic blue heron. He has been there for quite some time although I have only ever caught fleeting glimpses of him when he flushes. He is usually flying in the wrong direction for good photos.
Leucism (/ˈljuːkɪzəm/; or /ˈluːsɪzəm/) is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales or cuticle, but not the eyes. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in multiple types of pigment, not just melanin.

A great blue heron flares his head feathers at a rival heron in his territory as he catches a small stickleback fish at Buttertubs Marsh.

Ice Fishing (Great Blue Heron))
Took these shots yesterday while searching for the American Bittern at Buttertubs Marsh. It always amazes me the way that the herons and bitterns can find the hibernating frogs under all that Ice, snow, mud, and dead vegetation. Guess they gotta eat somehow this time of year.
