Swamp Giraffe (American Bittern)
Like most members of the heron family, these guys can really stretch their neck out.

Weird Bird Alert! (American Bittern)
Another gem from my Wednesday Shoot.

American Bittern Environmental
Hard to get a good clear shot of these guys. They are very seldom out in the open like this. Taken yesterday at Buttertubs Marsh here in Nanaimo.

Bittern Sweet Encounter 2024 (American Bittern Portrait)
Got a few photos of the Buttertubs bittern yesterday. Haven't seen him around for a couple of years. You can never tell with bitterns though as they blend in to the undergrowth so well. He was probably there the whole time.

Fishing In The Shadows (American Bittern)
Went to Buttertubs Marsh yesterday to visit the American bittern and found him fishing near the observation tower.

On The Prowl (American Bittern)
An American bittern hunts for frogs among the new bulrush shoots at the local marsh.

Frozen Bittern (American Bittern)
Went to Buttertubs Marsh again today to visit the local American Bittern. It was kind of funny because he froze in this position when he saw me and stayed that way for about 10 minutes before moving on.

Bittern Sweet Encounter (American Bittern)
Went to Buttertubs Marsh today for the first time in several months. Lots of cool things there to photograph. Here is something you don't see every day. An American Bittern hunting in the snow and dead cattails. At one point we even saw him catch and devour a frog. At this time of year! who knew? Left click twice for best detail.

Bittern Sweet Experience (American Bittern)
Short-eared owls, Harriers, and a somewhat frowsy American Bittern thrown in just for fun at the venue this weekend.

Frozen Football (American Bittern)
While standing in the marsh I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye just slightly behind me. It was like someone had thrown a football at me and it landed and rolled close by. It was a semi-frozen American bittern! Could not believe my eyes at first and managed to get this image at full frame. An extremely rare and interesting experience.
